3 Steps for Overcoming Sin

  • 3 mins read

“My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.”
1 John 2:1.

Overcoming sin is the battle faced by all Christians every day. Christians are not immune to sin but that doesn’t give us the license to sin. Romans 6:14 says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” Being Christians, we are no longer walk according to the law but by the grace of God poured on to us through the sacrificial death of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. As we strive to live a faithful Christian life, these 3 Steps for overcoming sin will be helpful in our battle against sin:

1) Realise and Recognise:

The first step to overcome sin is to realise that we are all sinners. Sin is an outcome of our desire for things God forbids. James 1:15 says, “Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.” If we don’t recognise our sins and how they could impact our lives, we will die in our sins. 1 John 1:8 says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

2) Remorse and Repent:

Unless we remorse and repent of our wrongdoings, we can’t get rid of sin from our lives. Proverbs 28:13 says, “He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” We need to wholeheartedly ask God for the forgiveness He offers through the sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

3) Reconcile and Refrain:

Through the forgiveness offered by the atonement of Christ, we are reconciled to God. David says in Psalm 103:12, “As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.” In order to be victorious in our fight against sin, we need to submit ourselves to God and stay connected to Him. Without being in constant fellowship with God, it is impossible for us to overcome sin. James 4:7 says, “Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

As long as we live in this world, we need to battle the problem of sin. But with God on our side, we can overcome the problem of sin. As we start this new month, may we earnestly ask God to help us overcome sin?
