As the New Year dawns, we might be having several expectations within us. Some of us expect to have some changes in our lives. Some of us expect certain things to happen at least this year. Some of us expect a turning point in our lives. But, are we just trusting on ourselves to receive the things that we expect? Or are we willingly putting our trust in the One who created us?
David says in Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”Does that mean David ignored his armies and handled the battles alone? No, the Biblical records show that David used his armies and weapons to fight the battle. Then why did David make such a statement? Is he conflicting with his own statement?
No, trusting God doesn’t mean waiting on the Lord to do everything, without taking efforts. Solomon clarifies this in Proverbs 21:31, “The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD.” We actually need to spend our efforts to prepare the horse against the day of battle. But we should not put our trust in horses and chariots to win the battle. Rather we must trust the Lord completely without whom our labour is in vain.
David further explains this in Psalm 127:1, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.” David understood that without the Lord’s hand, whatever he does will never work. The way David approached his battle sets the way for us to fight this year’s battle. Our own abilities and talents can’t win us this battle.
Solomon says in Proverbs 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” So, let us not trust in our own strength anymore. Let us prepare ourselves for the battle and trust Him completely for the victory in this New Year! Have a Victorious New Year in Christ!
