It’s again the time of the year, when we remember the sufferings and death of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Even today, it makes us wonder how someone could die for the ungodly and unrighteous ones like us. Paul also pondered on the same in Romans 5:7, “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The difference lies in the fact that the love of God is not comparable to human love. His love is unfailing and everlasting. His love is beyond our comprehension. All we know is that He loves us unconditionally just as we are.
This is a good season to remind ourselves that the death of Jesus signifies hope for humanity. His death is not just relevant to a specific group of people. It is relevant to each and every person ever lived on earth. Romans 5:6 says, “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” He died because we could not be righteous on our own and we were unable to keep the requirements of the law. The death of Jesus is relevant to the ungodly sinners.
Jesus declared the same when the Pharisees asked why He always associates Himself with sinners. He answered them saying, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5:32. His answer doesn’t mean that there is righteousness apart from Christ. It means that He is irrelevant to those who think that they are righteous on their own. The Bible says in Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. It is not “many” or “most”, but “all” have sinned. The Bible further makes it clear in Romans 3:10 saying, “There is none righteous, no, not one.” Hence His sacrifice is significant to not “many” or “most” but to “all” of us.
Even today many people in this world think that Jesus is irrelevant to them. They seek to establish their own righteousness and in turn increase in their unrighteousness. They are ignorant of God’s righteousness and think that they can reach God by their own efforts. But Jesus says in John 14:6, ““I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” Having been made righteous by the blood of Christ, is it not our duty to share God’s love demonstrated through the death of His Son Jesus Christ on the cross?
Let us make a decision this Good Friday to tell people that Christ is relevant to them even today!
